At three a week, Gujarat fifth in organ donations nationally

According to the National Organization of Tissue and Transplantation Organization (NOTTO) figures for 2023, the following states in India showed an upward trend in cadaver donation, with Telangana being at the forefront with 200 cadaver donations, followed by Karnataka with 178 donations, Tamil Nadu at 176 donations, Maharashtra at 149 donations and Gujarat with 146 cadaver donations. 2023 saw an increase in the number of organ retrieval, especially for small bowel and pair of lungs where the rise in number was eight-fold and almost two-fold respectively. The numbers are certainly reflective of the increasing awareness among public as well as advancement seen infrastructurally. SOTTO officials from Gujarat have added around 75+ organ retrieval centres in the state since 2021 and are hopeful to see further increase in organ donation to deliver necessary help to patients on the transplant lists.
