Proposal to change a few policies within the National Organization of Tissue and Transplantation Organization (NOTTO) guidelines was brought up in the Union Health Ministry in February, 2023. The guidelines likely to undergo changes are:
- The Centre plans to remove the upper age limit for entering the transplantation waiting list as longevity in India has increased and 65+ year old patient is no longer considered an elderly patient.
- The Centre has urged State Governments to stop taking registration fee to enter a patient’s name into the transplantation waiting list.
- The Centre plans to scrap the domicile requirement which will then allow a citizen to register on the organ waitlist in any state. Earlier, patients living in other states were not allowed to register for organ allocation.
